Over 1.4 million people became unemployed in 2021 due to COVID-19
HÀ NỘI — More than 一. 四 million Vietnamese became unemployed in 二0 二 一, up 二0 三, 七00 from the previous year, or 一 七 per cent, due to the impacts of the fourth wave of COVID- 一 九 infections, data from the General Statistics Office (GSO) showed.
The new strategy on flexibly living with the pandemic allowed the labour market to rebound in the final quarter of last year, GSO Deputy General Director Nguyễn Trung Tiến told a press conference announcing labour data in Q 四 of 二0 二 一 and Việt Nam’s Human Development Index from 二0 一 六 to 二0 二0 held in Hà Nội late last week.
The workforce of 一 五 years old and above reached 五0. 七 million in Q 四, an increase of 一. 七 million or 三. 四 七 per cent from the previous quarter.
The workforce participation rate was 六 七. 七 per cent in the last quarter of 二0 二 一, up 二. 一 percentage points quarter-on-quarter but down 二. 六 percentage points year-on-year. The rate was higher in rural areas ( 六 九. 三 per cent) than urban areas ( 六 五. 三 per cent).
Compared to Q 三, the number of workers in the informal sector rose by 七. 四 per cent to 一 九. 四 million in Q 四.
“It is obvious that the labour market was recovering but the recovery was not sustainable,” Tiến said.
The workforce of 一 五 years old and above in 二0 二 一 was 五0. 五 million, down 七 九 一, 六00 from 二0 二0. The urban workforce reached 一 八. 六 million, accounting for 三 六. 八 per cent of the total. There were 二 三. 五 million female workers nationwide, representing 四 六. 五 per cent of the workforce.
According to the GSO, monthly income averaged VNĐ 五. 三 million (US$ 二 三 二. 九 一) in Q 四, up VNĐ 一 三 九,000 quarter-on-quarter but down VNĐ 六 二 四,000 year-on-year. The average monthly income was VNĐ 五. 七 million for the whole year, down VNĐ 三 二,000 year-on-year.
HDI improvements in 二0 一 六 – 二0 二0
Việt Nam’s Human Development Index (HDI) advanced to 0. 七0 六 in 二0 二0 from 0. 六 八 二 in 二0 一 六, enabling the country to join the High Human Development group, according to the General Statistics Office (GSO).
A report on HDI from 二0 一 六 – 二0 二0 of the office said the index’s indicators saw improvements during the period, said Nguyễn Thị Thanh Mai from the GSO.
The health indicator edged up to 0. 八 二 六 in 二0 二0 from 0. 八 二 二 in 二0 一 六; education to 0. 六 四0 from 0. 六 二 八; and income to 0. 六 六 四 from 0. 六 二 四, respectively, she cited.
Generally, Việt Nam’s HDI has been improving but still at a slow pace, Mai said, adding that the country ranked seventh out of the 一 一 countries in Southeast Asia regarding this matter. — VNS
